Ulzhan (not his real name) is an underground church leader at a secret location in Central Asia. By speaking openly about his faith, he is putting himself at great risk.

But Ulzhan knows firsthand the power of the lifesaving message of the gospel. When he came face-to-face with the hope of God's Word, he was willing to take whatever risk necessary to share the good news with others.

That's why Ulzhan has dedicated his life to sharing Jesus with others. But it wasn't always this way...

Where following Jesus can cost everything

For over 60 years, Open Doors has worked in the world's most oppressive countries, empowering Christians who are persecuted for their beliefs. Open Doors equips persecuted Christians in more than 60 countries through programs like Bible & Gospel Development, Women & Children Advancement and Christian Community Restoration.

In the country where Ulzhan lives, substance abuse is a huge problem, especially among youth. It was no different for Ulzhan.

“My life slipped away after I came back from the army,” he recalls. “Life just didn’t have any purpose. I did what so many young people do in Central Asia—I drank a lot of alcohol and used drugs to make me feel better.”

Then Ulzhan was invited to go to church. And unexpectedly, God grabbed ahold of him.

“Within one month, I didn’t drink, smoke or use drugs anymore,” he shares.

But more than that, Ulzhan was so moved by God that he committed his life to putting His Word into the hands of Central Asian believers through discipleship and training, even at the risk of imprisonment and danger.

"Life just didn't have any purpose"

“Thank you so much for providing our church with Bibles. Without your help, we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to give people the most important thing—the Word of God! Your ministry played a tremendous role in our call to reach out to Muslims for Christ.”

—Pastor Hakeem*

“God revealed to me how precious I am to Him and that it doesn’t matter if I have an earthly family or not. I learned to look at myself through His eyes and learned to respect and love myself. My life absolutely changed, thanks to this small book.”

The most dangerous book

The Bible is the most dangerous book in many places around the world, including Central Asia, because it is considered a threat to the government's rule.

But God is using faithful servants like Ulzhan to reach people with the truth of His Word. But there are so many people in Central Asia and other parts of the world who have had little or no opportunity to hear the gospel or to know the one true God. And the enemy is intent on making it as difficult as possible to follow Jesus for those who do accept Him.

That’s why your gift to provide Bibles and discipleship training for persecuted believers is so important right now.
