VIOLENCE ESCALATES IN SYRIA

Our news feeds have been filled with complete sorrow and terror this week — images of chemical warfare being used in Syria.

On Tuesday, at least 70 people were killed in a suspected chemical attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun, located in northwestern Syria, the BBC reported.

Eyewitnesses say the attack hit early Tuesday morning, while many were still asleep. Those who inhaled the chemical gas are suffering serious medical issues, while some died instantly. People were found, many of them children, in the streets, choking and gasping for breath.

The victims who survived have experienced foaming of the mouth, blue facial skin and lips, severe shortness of breath and asphyxiation. It is believed that 400 have suffered respiratory problems.

Last month, we reported that Syria has been at civil war for six years. Almost 5 million Syrians have fled the country and over 6 million are displaced internally.

CHEMICAL WARFARE IN SYRIA CREATES EXTREME NEED

In response, at 3:45 a.m. (local, Syrian time) Friday morning, President Trump launched a precise air strike upon the Syrian air base accused of being the source for the chemical attack.

Deploying 59 American cruise missiles, initial reports claim much of the air base has been destroyed.

POTENTIAL FOR EVEN GREATER NEED ESCALATES

The future is uncertain. But it’s clear believers and nonbelievers alike throughout Syria are living in a sort of hell-on-earth. And while this part of the world is not geographically close to us, they are near in our hearts.

Still reeling from the chaos surrounding their lives as refugees, the escalating violence is another danger threatening their lives.

That’s why, as believers in Jesus, we must pray for those living within the cross fire in this region — for protection, safety and a peaceful end to the senseless loss of life.

PLEASE JOIN US IN PRAYER FOR SYRIA

  • For families struck by terror in such an unexpected way — while they were sleeping — to receive the care and rest that they need to physically and emotionally heal from this horrific ordeal.
  • For those who executed the attack. This act was full of evil and hate, but no one is too far from God’s saving grace. May God convict their hearts today of the evil act they did — in direct rebellion to Him and His Word. May He save them miraculously, just as God did with Paul, while he was persecuting the church.
  • For believers in Syria and in this region as they navigate so much uncertainty. May they remain faithful to God through these most difficult times as He sustains them with peace and endurance. May the gospel be ever-present in their minds.
